The new website thread on the forum here has gotten me thinking about perhaps the addition of an intro/teaser video on the homepage to jazz up what is a very nice and clean, but static page. Mind you, I wouldn't want the video to start when the page loads, but only on user request, but still, it's video that creates sizzle on the Web.

I am trying to bridge two objects, but when I do one turns red.  What needs to be done to remove the red?

Still trying to work my way through Wings but I have found modelling with it far easier than Max/Blender etc The interface seems second nature, good job to all involved.

Exporting to .X flips model along YZ

Hi everyone,

I'm relatively new to Wings3D, just found this program today whilst searching the web for a model painter and exporter. In teaching myself Wings3D over the past few hours, I must say that I'm hugely impressed by this program.

One small problem I'm having, is that when I load up my exported .X models in my program, my models appear mirrored, or flipped, along the YZ plane. The right is the left, and the left is the right. Everything else appears OK though. I've tried "Inverting" my model, but that just turned everything inside out, not the desired effect that I'm after! One obvious work around would be for myself to simply flip the model prior to export, but I'd prefer if the .X exporter function catered for this during the export from Wings 3D.

I'm just curious as to what's causing my models to flip when exporting to the .X format, and what I can do to prevent it.

Hello there, well I have this problem with wings, I simple can't import or open files, anytime I try any of this, the app will simply stop working, and I have to force it out. The only way I can get something open is when I open it from the finder, but if this is an .OBJ it won't work. The app also does not give me any kind of error or message.
I have try all my files and reinstalling the app, but the problem continues.
I'll apreciate all the help you can provide!

I'm not sure if this should be in the main forum or plugins, I want a simple gradient background, two color is fine, from y+ to y-. Yes it's not that hard to set up a Skybox in Wings3d, but that adds extra materials, and extra geometry, not good when your just modeling and don't need those in the export. A background image would be fine as well, but it would have to cover the geometry window, rather than as a Image plane. Just for some different mood when modeling ....

Hello! Excuse me, but I got a weird problem after the installation of the Wings 3D 1.4.1 including Microsoft Visual C ++ 2005 Redistributable x86. My OS is Windows 7 Home Basic x64 (Rus) and before the installation it had another package installed - Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable x86 vers 8.0.61001 of about 300 kb sized). While installing Wings 3D few days ago (19th July) I was not aware of it, just noticed the program deleting some old files of Microsoft Visual C++ and replacing them with its own. And after the installation I found this program didn't work properly on my system, that is it couldn't import 3D files (obj and 3DS), couldn't find those files etc. Possibly the cause was the cirillic username or smth else, I don't know. But after rebooting I found my Windows booting much longer than before (4 minutes vs former 1.5). I thought Wings 3D 1.4.1 was unsuitable for my Windows 7 and decided to try another simple 3D modeler and...

I consider this a bug, since.. well, how do you fix this, with the existing tools?

Background... Took a cylinder, smoothed the sides, but not the end, to get more rounding, then extruded the sides, to get another section. So.. First problem - You can't dissolve the original center cylinder, to get a ring. Ok, no problem, used Manifold Labs CSG and a smaller copy, to cut out the hole I needed (man I love that plugin). So.. duplicated the ring, and scaled it a bit, so I had smaller blocks, in a ring, them smoothed that scaled it up a bit, and then extrudes every other face on the original, scaled the ends a bit, and dragged them down to line up to my smoothed torus (the regular torus you can't scale up in size, without also scaling the sizes of the mane part. You get a giant fat one, or a really small skinny one, but you can get a really large skinny one (or, I am missing some scale function that actually does this....).

So, I think.. I tried to use Manifold to merge these two objects. Not sure, because either I didn't intrude the tips of my extrudes...

How do you use the .hole. function?
is it still a material?
if I select faces and click on .hole. then those faces disappear, fine as it stands, but how do I get those faces back?

64bit linux build

Hi. Is there any working fully 64bit build for linux (erlang+everything)? I decided to use Wings for a work related project and it keeps crashing ("cannot allocate blah blah blah"). The geometry is huge, I can do nothing about it, as it comes from the workflow (Catia/Ansa/Fluent/Ensight+inhouse postprocessing tools). I have no problems working with it in Blender (64bit), I just like Wings more and I've got no idea how to do some things in Blender, which are very simple in Wings. I've been able to do the first phase of the project, but it was a real pain. My workstation has 144GB of RAM, so the 64bit would be great.

Hi,
seems that Wings3D is not compatible with Mac OS X Mountain Lion. I downloaded the current version from the wings3d website. Using the app is like under Snow Leopard, where the app is usable, yet drag-select with the mouse is broken - a known problem as far as I know. Under Mountain Lion however ESDL(?)/Wings3D crash upon quitting the program. The apps remain open and have to be force-quit.

False alarm or do other people have the same problem?

Numeric camera position dialog forgets rotation angles

If I type into the numeric camera position dialog, then hit OK, then decide I want to adjust the values, the angles I typed in the first time are forgotten! The camera position is saved, but not the angles...

Wings savefiles are binary, but as I understand they're just a dump of the internal state of the scene graph. How about an alternate savefile mode that is a text dump instead - say, JSON or XML or something? This would make it easier to version-control Wings savefiles, as you could see exactly what has changed between any two versions, and you could even (with some skill) copy-paste sections between different files to copy scene elements around!

Is Wings still going to be ported to wxWidgets? I understand some groundwork has been laid and you can even compile Wings with some kind of wx support (although I haven't noticed any differences), but is the project still a going concern?
Also, would the wxWidgets foundation make any of the following true?
  • Wings would have OS-native look and feel and a conventional set of widgets
  • There would be more concurrency, and Wings would be faster as a result
  • There would be no SDL any more

I tried registering for the new forum, using my yahoo email - the same email I use for this forum, but I never got the email. So I tried to register again thinking it didn't like yahoo (I've had that happen before) and I got this:

Paint Select - is now acting like magnet and dragging things - very annoying - how turn off ?

I use wings3d 1.4.1 as my main modelling tool and recently upgraded to find I can no longer paint selections -

This holding the left mouse button down just drags the surface all over the shop ......

Very annoying ...... from a fast selection method ........

Now to a major pain ...... not sure how many times I have moved vectors by accident ..... and not sure if after doing so I have saved the model ......... gone is my accuracy ..... as things now may have moved during the select sequence .......

Is there a way to go back ......

Ticked default commands .......... but this magnet behaviour is anything but the original default ...........

Any way to get back - is there a box to tick somewhere ......... ( no magnet - as I do not need it as its messing up my models as I select constantly back tracking to make sure things are where they should be ) paint select is like a major tool and default setting .

Is magnet more useful to some people...
